Leaving My Mark

I walked on the beach some time ago and noticed the footprints in the sand. I admit that I am usually more interested in watching the sunset or the waves crash on the shore, than to pay attention to peoples’ footprints. But footprints can tell us about the kind of people that leave them. They can tell us if the person is an adult or a child. If they are flat-footed or have high arches? They can tell us if the person has a friend or had to walk alone. In the same way, the things we do leave a “footprint” that reveal who we are and what is important to us. It got me thinking, what kind of impression am I leaving on this earth?

We use many phrases to talk about this sort of thing. Sometimes we say, “I want to leave my mark” or “I want to make a difference” or “I want to leave a legacy.” I believe all of us, at least at some level, are conscious of how we live our lives and the kind of impact that our lives are making in this world. “I want my life to mean something!” is the cry of many disillusioned people today. What kind of a life does that look like? How can we make an impact on this world that lasts long after we die?

I heard someone say, “There are only two things in life that last. God’s Word (The Bible) and people.” God’s words are timeless. They are applicable today just as much as they were thousands of years ago (Isaiah 40:8). And people have been around almost as long as this earth has been in existence. So the point is, why not invest your life in things that will last? Things that will make a continuing impact in this world, long after we have moved on.

At All Nations Church Phuket (ANCP), we want to be a people that leave a useful, lasting footprint in Phuket.  We may be living here a few months or a few years, but while we have the privilege of living on this island we want to make our time to count. At ANCP, we are committed to do what we can to make Phuket a better place than we found it. Whether that is coming alongside those helping disadvantaged children, serving with those who hold out hope to the women trapped in a life of prostitution, or encouraging the man who came to Thailand looking for a fresh start. Investing our lives in the lives of others can’t help but leave a lasting impression.

Why do we do this? Simply because people matter to God. And because they matter to God, they matter to us. You matter to us.

I invite you to come and be a part of our community of faith. All Nations Church Phuket is an English-speaking, international church in the Kathu, Phuket area, made up of people from different nations who have a heart for all the nations of this world.

From the inside out

As a child, church to me was more a Sunday ritual than a meaningful experience. I didn’t mind going to church with my parents, most of the time. I heard stories about the miracles of God and the teachings of Jesus. I knew a lot about God, but I didn’t really know Him. It was a lot like knowing the prime minister of Canada from what you read in the news as opposed to being good friends with him.

And then when I was 11 years old something happened. I went from knowing a lot about God, to knowing God as a real… well, person. Before that, Jesus was someone who influenced my life from the outside, but now He was someone who was influencing my life from the inside out. Changing the way I look at life. Changing the way I make decisions. Changing what I want to do with my life.

I suspect that there are a lot of people who know about God. Maybe you are one of them. You’ve been to church at Christmas, Easter or for a wedding. You have heard the name of God, but like me, He doesn’t seem all that real.

But He is. That is what we are all about at All Nations Church Phuket. Helping people get beyond knowing about God, to really knowing God.

Why would you want to know God? Because life is just better when you do. You have peace when you should be anxious. You have hope when you should feel despair. You have strength when feel helpless. You have purpose when you lack direction. Knowing God simply makes life better.

We invite you to come and know Him.

An English Church in Phuket? Is it boring?

Are you looking for an english church in Phuket?

Some people find church boring, irrelevant, judgmental or strange. For a few, it is a lot worse.  But for many, church is actually the complete opposite.

What is it that causes some people to spend some of their time on a given Sunday, sitting in a church service, instead of sleeping in bed or spending the time at the beach?  I think the answer lies in the fact that there is something about church that is worth it to them.  Church has value to them.  There is something that the church offers that you can’t get anywhere else.

For some, the value is in the community that it offers.  It is a place where you feel like you belong.  A place where you can have authentic friendship with others, that goes beyond the typical conversation about the weather or the latest gadget.

For others, the value is in the encouragement they receive.  Life is not easy.  We face struggle all the time, whether it comes from work, family or within ourselves.  Church is a place where your hope is renewed.   Sometimes you need a word just to keep going and not give up.

For still others, the value is in the spiritual guidance they receive.  Many people are on a spiritual sojourn.  They realize that there is more to this life than what can be obtained in the physical realm alone.

Or lastly, for some people the value is in being a part of something that is making a difference in this world.  People want to know that their life counts for something.  That they are making a contribution that makes this world a better place.

Ultimately, the church is about people.  It is about offering belonging, hope, guidance, influence, and so much more.  This may not have been your experience in the past.  But it can be a your experience now.

At All Nations Church Phuket, you won’t find perfect people.  But hopefully you will find people who are on the way to being all that God wants them to be.  If you are looking for an english church in Phuket – we invite you to check us out.
